This is a European color convention. Cars with red caps could run on regular unleaded whilst the green-capped cars required at least 91 octane. Diesel is yellow. The black caps you see are actually VW parts- note the notch cut in the underside of the cap, a VW patent for storage on the fuel door. Americans typically have an "I don't care, whatever" attitude so we get whatever fills the parts bins. Those who care about performance and want their valves to last 2.5 times forever will get mid-grade or higher. Just go for a bike ride one of these days and you'll hear V6 Tauruseses and Hyundais and other cars knocking themselves into oblivion when they're trying to burn watered-down garbage from C#%$^!land Farms just to save enough over the life of the car to pay for head damage. Saabs with APC and Trionic, et cetera are not as sensitive, but I've never owned a turbo, and I notice the difference on my (vacuum-advanced set timing 8 valve) '88 900 and the (electronic injection/"floating" timing knock-sensored) '92 SC.
