I'm trying to diagnose the source of a bearing/gear/CV joint humming noise coming from my '87 900 automatic. The pitch is proportional to the speed of the car, and has been gradually increasing in volume over the last 10k miles or so. Sounds very similar to the sound made by bad bearings. However, it does not seem to change in characteristic when going around corners as bearings commonly do. The CV joint boots look to be in good shape. I just changed the fluid in the tranny final drive (only about a pint of fluid came out) and the noise did not improve.

Because of the low level of gear lube, I suspected a shot final drive. But, when I raise the front end up on jack stands and run the motor in drive I can't hear any noise. So now I'm back to thinking it's the left or right bearings since it seems like that noise might go away when the axles aren't weighted.

Anyone have thoughts on this? Should I just install new bearings and see if that fixes it or are there other things I can do to locate the source (if the tranny is bad, I have to decide if it is worth putting any more money into the car or just shoot it.)
