If the only symptom that you are having is slipping of the 1-2, 2-1 shift, all other shifts are fine and crisp and no other slipping, then you either have a sluggish front band servo or a worn/burned front band. The first thing to consider is how many miles are on this transmission. Most of the C900 automatics that ended up on my bench because they had become undrivable had right around 150,000 miles on them. The point of mentioning this is that if your transmission has that sort of mileage then you may be able to affect some improvement but there probably isn't a reliable, real fix short of a rebuild or replacement and many guys would install a 5 speed transmission. So, you can drain and refill the unit with type F ATF and change the filter which may help free up the servo and can sometimes improve the function of worn friction elements like the front band. Beyond that you could attempt to adjust the front band, (tighten it a little), but if the band is badly worn this is kind of like trying to make worn out brake pads work by just stomping the pedal harder. It wouldn't hurt to check the adjustment of the shift control cable. You do that at the shift lever and it is a pretty critical procedure so get the manual, don't just wing it. Mostly I'd suggest that you change your fluid and filter and cross your fingers (just like you thought). Good luck.
