I've replaced both of these lights with LED bits. Once you get the contact to hold, they're bulletproof (that is if the LED doesn't go south in the first three months, infant failure) and last maybe 5000-10000 hours.
You might try removing the bulb holder and bending the contacts so they hold tightly to the film. After removing/replacing the holders a half dozen times or so the contact area on the film can get worn or torn and have intermittent contact. You can replace the film (there are two of them, spendy) or try soldering in some stranded copper wire to replace the worn part. I've done this on the film for the horn wires on the stock saab steering wheel horn contacts (three button tri-spoke wheel) but you have to be really careful...the film will buckle.
