I just replaced mine. I wouldn't mess around with "universal fit" converters, then you're going to get into welding and all that stuff.

Site sponsor Eeuroparts has a direct fit bolt on replacement converter for 200 something bucks. I'd buy that and put it on. Its not that cheap but it's the best way IMO.

Note that I'd bet when you try to remove the cat (4 nuts/studs on each end), I'd bet that all or most of the bolts/nuts/studs will break. This is because of the heat cycling, and it's been on the car for about 20 years.

Plan ahead and order new exhaust bolts (4 needed?), 8 new exhaust nuts and 12 or 16 washers to use. Don't use regular hardware store/Home Depot bolts and nuts. Use the correct ones, they're different b/c of heat exhausts are exposed to.

ALSO order a donut shaped metal o-ring that seals between the cat and downpipe and the cat to intermediate pipe gasket (a metal thing). You'll need both and there's a good chance that this o-ring has decayed/rusted/is all or party gone.

Once you have dropped the exhaust or the old cat, check the heat shield over the converter for any rust holes. If that rusts, many bigger problems develop, the end result being that the main car wiring harness by the key melts from heat.

I changed mine in my driveway with the car on jack stands. A little annoying and frustrating, but totally do-able.

If you get into replacing the heat shield I mentioned earlier (ie if its rusty), its more complicated as you have to pull out center console/carpet/etc to get at the bolts/nuts.
