i've had problems with auto transmissions (one in particular), but not the same exact one (not being able to upshift). My chronic problem with an 89 convertible was that the transmission wouldn't work AT ALL, unless the car was warmed-up for about 5 minutes. This applied to all forward gears, reverse worked regardless. I lived with this for over a year, during which the car leaked huge amounts of transmission fluid. I spent money on ATF and I made a mess wherever I went.
I WILL NEVER, EVER BUY AN AUTOMATIC SAAB CLASSIC AGAIN. I learned my lesson. As good as the classic 900s are, the ones with an auto transmission can be poison. Honestly, the auto transmission can be cool when it's working, but when it's not...it's really no fun. Unless pampered and maintained by a SAAB saint, at this point in the c900 life cycle it's safe to assume all the auto transmissions are near death. So, I stay away from them 100%.
If you're going to go the route of a new transmission, I'd suggest looking into a 5 speed (manual) transplant a.k.a. sex-change. It will cost around the same and will be much more rewarding.
