Manual Transmission - no reverse!!!!!

I purchased a 1989 Saab 900 from a friend. It's a great car and I love it . . . unfortunately, I don't know a lot about fixing issues when it comes to transmissions . . .
When I bought the car, if I shifted to reverse, it would engage and I could back up about 15 feet before it would kick itself back to neutral . . . just wouldn't stay in reverse, even if I was holding the shift arm down.
I got stuck in the snow with it last night and had to rock it to get it out. In the midst of rocking the car, reverse stopped engaging altogether . . . I can shift the arm into position, but it's as if the gear doesn't catch. The engine revs and there is a little bit of grinding noise, but no reverse.
Is this a simple fix that I may be able to do at home, or am I screwed with an expensive problem? How do I fix it???
