This sounds to me that the shift coupler between the transmission and firewall has a problem. And, there is a correct way to align that coupler, so if it is not adjusted properly, the shifting could be stiff as well. That is one that doing on a lift is much easier to accomplish -- at least at this point in my life!
The taper pin in the coupler can be difficult to get out. Back out the nut a few turns and then apply force to the loosened nut to push out the pin. Be careful not to foul the threads -- use a sacrificial spacer between your BFH and the nut.
