Engine for my '79 900 GLE 5-door

I have this incredibly solid '79 900 5-door and I am having trouble trying to decide which way to go regarding the engine (and tranny for that matter). Let me say that I LOVE the feel and sound of the original engine, and I am not that interested in it being really fast, but I am finding out that parts for the B engine are getting impossible to find. My timing chain has been rattling and I haven't been able to find any timing chain parts for several months now, not to mention other parts (water pump, etc) that will be needed eventually. so....
What should I do? I do want to make it a daily driver and even a trip car. If I can't get B parts, then should I go to the H engine or the 16-valve? Can one get all the parts for the H engine these days? Or am I forced to go with the 16-valve for the long term? I just wish B parts were available so I wouldn't have to waste time on all this and it would be so easy :-)
Also, the auto tranny is leaking real bad, and I do generally prefer a manual tranny. I think I have made up my mind to go ahead and convert to the 5-speed, although, I must admit that it is real nice not having to clutch when I am in those lazy moods. If I do decide to stay with the auto tranny, what mileage should I expect to get highway vs city?
What a nice car! What to do?
