how do you know if a cam follower is bad?

Thanks. I think that's my next move, pulling the engine. kind of excited about it actually. I think I have to reattach the head to the engine because one of the lift hooks is on the head. Is that right?
Also- I was checking out the lifter/cam followers. Some are springy when I squeeze them, some aren't. The one's that don't bounce back when I squeeze them move more like a plunger. I can pull the diaphragm in or out, but no springing. Anyway, how do you tell a dead cam follower? I still think the knock is coming from the lower block and I'm going to pull the engine to find out but I thought I should take care of any bad lifters while I have it all apart. Thanks again, I would never attempt to pull the engine with out this board.
Well, I'm off to harbor freight to look at engine hoists.
