Probably a leak. I just went through the same thing, the lights came on intermittantly. I checked for leaks but couldn't find any. Then, I had to replace my left rear directional bulb. While I had the lens off I figured I should check the rest of the bulbs as well. I propped the break pedal so I could check the brake light. While I was outside the car I heard fluid running, and sure enough, brake fluid was leaking from the rear line at the center mounting point at the rear axle. The rest of the line was fine, but I got rust through just at that spot. It's well hidden so I couldn't detect a leak earlier. Propping the pedal made it finally fail completely. I'm also in NY. Road salt is a bitch. Glad I had a couple parts cars in the yard.
