'91 non-turbo 900: Replace hi-mi engine

Have just been told my '91 900 (non-turbo), 238K mi, has a burned exhaust valve and very low compression in the respective cylinder. Mechanic recommends engine replacement over valve job saying the carbon build-up from oil burning (maybe 24 oz over 600 highway mi) could result in another burnt valve.
The prospective replacement engine ('92) has 149k mi. No compression check available, but 90-day warranty. The shop wants $3000 (includes $900 for the engine) plus $200 to replace main seal. If timing chain is not within tolerances, they want an additional $1200.
Feedback on any of these points would be appreciated. The prices seem exorbitant. I know: "What's it worth to you?" But I need some perspective on this and on the issue of whether or not the assessment of the inadvisability of valve job seems reasonable.
