short shifter- remove assembly with the 3 torx screws Posted by nicknick [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: happened to me last winter-if you are lucky, a larg, Mike Hopman, Tue, 18 Dec 2007 08:09:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
, then with remaining shifter assembly in hand, grind the little weld spot off the base of the metal ball and remove the bottom section of the shaft, with the reverse lock out pin on. at this point you are left with a metal sphere, and the shaft that came off in your hands originally. the wire that operates reverse can be pulled out, either with force, or disassemble shift knob and unhook wire from top (if you want to preserve it, for any reason. measure the length of shaft that extended below the ball, then slide your remaining shifter shaft through the ball so the same length extends down. the shaft/ball relationship is very close, so i just used super glue to lock them together, as the the cyro glue is thin enough to migrate down into the join and lock them together. you will notice that what you have now looks the same below the ball as before, except no reverse pin. this means you will have to use some common sense while shifting NOT to go to reverse while moving forward. i never had a problem, and used this set-up for about 6 months before finding a replacement shaft.
ironically, i got a shaft from scanwest, seattle, fit it, thinking my wife DIDN'T like the short shift, only to find out SHE was disappointed! had i known, i would have left it on forever! it is a great feel, very notchy.
there is a chap on classifieds (matthew carr, MA) that has a shift lever for $50, i think. good luck-i'll watch this post if you have any more questions.
