towing with bad clutch

Hi,
I've just been given a free 89 900S. The guy giving it away is an old VW mechanic and he says the clutch master cylinder is bad. He said when it went the clutch engaged and it shot him out into traffic.
Anyway, the car is sitting in his driveway and it needs to be towed tomorrow. I'm currently on the east cost for Christmas and the car's in Oregon so I can't be there for the tow. He said the car is in gear. Should he be able to shift the car into neutral with the clutch engaged? My dad says he remembers sitting in his sister's old truck as a kid and going through all the gears in the driveway without using the clutch. So he thinks it should be no problem to just pop it into neutral without the clutch.
So if the car's in gear how can it be towed? What should I tell the guy? Thanks.
