breath again!
ok, the rubber coupling has most probably failed between the firewall and the transmission (this is in engine bay, directly under the alternator belts, directly ahead of shift lever. look directly down into that area, and have daughter move shift lever side-to-side. you will notice the mechanism i am talking about, and how the forward end doesn't move as much as the rear end. the coupling is the flat metal piece with 2 nuts on the top. this is about 2" wide, and 3/4" long (in relation to the car, ie. length is front to back).
you have to make a choice about how soon she needs the car.
1) she needs to drive somewhere tomorrow
2)she could wait a week or so.
1) go to nearest auto parts place/ home depot, etc and get a pair of 1 1/4" hose clamps, or whichever size would emcompass that size.
jack you the car as high as you can. you really want one side to be up there, like 2' if you could, but just as high as you can. the higher, the easier it is. take your 2 clamps and a nice long flat head screwdriver, slide on under there and basically slip one clamp over each side of the coupling, so they ride right over the nuts. tighten up and you should be good. have her engage all gears while you under there (all this without engine running, and car SAFELY SUPPORTED), just to make sure the loose end of the clamp doesn't fowl anything.
2) book it in to your favourite shop and wait for the $200-$300 bill, depending on the shop, and wether they use the entire new part or just the required rubber part. actually, entire part is $175 i think, and the rubber part is like $25.
in any case, normal failure, get a new one in there soon. have them check for oil leaks from front oil seaql or oil pump while they are there-often the cause of coupling failure.
good luck
