Ugh! passive seat belts are finally history, but what Posted by nicknick [Email] ![]() ![]() |
a PITA! i decided to go with a complete conversion to regular belts, as i had a donor car with a decent headliner, and the headliner associated with the passive belts was pretty shot.pulling/ replacing the front pillar covers was a night mare, ended up cutting a little of the lip that hooks under the dash, as i didn't have any plans of pulling the dash! the rear pillar covers (can't remember the letters!) that went with the HL were an obvious choice, until i realized that the rear SB mounts were in a different position! well, went with it, drilled/tapped new mounting holes for those...
Then onto the front belts. the 88 did not have brackets for the belt winder assembly, so i cut the old ones from the 92, and we welded those in. thought i was on the downhill stretch, but then i realized that the center pillars have a different hole layout! i was done drilling/tapping at this point, so decided instead to drill a hole in the covers and cap the existing hole with a nice little cover left over from the front pillars-looks good, but the upper sb mounting is a couple of inches lower than it should be, works/feels fine.
well, including cutting the holes in the rear side panels for the sb, that was about it. definately worth the effort, looks like a normal car again, and is about 15lbs lighter!
thats one way to spend a weekend!
