the 12.2 v reading may simply be the battery voltage right when you are taking the reading. as you know it should be 14+ volts if the alternator is doing its job.
check all connections to the alternator as well as connection from alt to ground (usually to oil filter housing or alternator mount bracket), and also the thin wire from the wiring harness connecting to the alternator - if this circuit is broken the alternator wont charge the battery.
keep us informed of your progress.
there are a couple more tests you can do (ie B terminal to ground , then D terminal to ground) but they are more involved so do the above checks first.
