The '79 car would have a Borg-Warner type 35 automatic transaxle, unless it has been swapped for a newer unit in which case it will have a type 37. The type 37 was introduced during the 1980 model year. The differences are relatively minor. The T35 lacks the accumulators that the T37 has and that might account for a slightly snappier engagement but the accumulators were added for a reason: they cushion clutch engagement so the clutch lasts longer and doesn't exhibit harsh engagement. I think it's pretty unlikely that your '79 has it's original transaxle unless it has less than 150,000 miles on it (over 28 years!!).
First of all check the throttle cable adjustment and then the shift cable adjustment (which is very critical) but sluggish first gear engagement is a common problem with well worn T37s. Fine sludge gets deposited in small crevices of the hydraulic circuitry, ATF breaks down and filter effectiveness diminishes as the friction clutch elements wear. Only a complete rebuild will truly solve these problems but often replacing the filter and ATF (be sure to use only type F ATF) will bring back some of the snap. While changing the filter check that the pump pick up tube is securely installed also. It's possible to adjust the bands and do a few other things if you want to dig in but sluggish first gear engagement won't be effected.
