Oil feed pipes to lifters

My 85 SPG has been suffering from a noisy lifter for a while now.
I read somewhere that there are "o" rings where the oil feed pipes connect to the head (under the valve cover) and that these can dry out and no longer seal.
I pulled my valve cover to check and found that none of the places where the feed pipe connects to the head had "o" rings.
Did I mis-read something or have mine just completely dissolved?
