PRE-'88 HUBS or NOT???

I am upgrading my '79 900 GLE 5-door with a 16-valve and 5-speed, but my mechanic (who has been amazing) is wanting to change my hubs/brakes to the '88+ hubs. I am not sure I want to go through all that trouble and expense unless it is really worth it. I am also wanting to keep the soccer ball wheels and I'm not sure which hubs will work with those wheels. Is there something wrong with the pre'88 hubs? Is it worth the effort to move to the '88+ hubs? Another question might be, what is wrong with the original '79 hubs & brakes? Are parts not available? I actually like the hand brake working on the front wheels, but perhaps there's something I don't know. Do you all agree that the upgrade to '88+ hubs is the preferred way to go? I would like to hear your opinions on this topic. Thanks! This BB ROCKS!
