bike tool not much help Posted by CMyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from CMyles) on Sat, 19 Jan 2008 08:56:35 In Reply to: Re: Timing chain help., Brian in Toronto, Sat, 19 Jan 2008 06:57:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Brian, A lot of guys use a bike chain tool to push out a pin for disassembling the old chain but assembling the new chain is different. You have to press a plate onto a new master link, sort of like the master link that was on old coaster brake or three speed bikes except that it's a much harder press fit and on a bigger chain. Never really thought about doing this but I guess that you could steal a link from your old chain and use it in place of the new master link and assemble it with a bike tool the same way that you do a derailleur geared bike chain, by pushing pins in and out (and then maybe peening them over for security). I'd hate to discover that there's some good reason to not do that while ripping down the highway so I'll stick with the supplied master link for now. Cheers
