The crank pulley, also known as the harmonic balancer, is two seperate chunks of metal with a bit of rubber in between. eventually the rubber can shrink and separate, allowing the pulley to get off balance or even slip severely. mine used to squeal like crazy when it slipped, and i would lose power steering etc. if yours is slipping like this you will know as the belts to the alternator, power steering and ac will cease to move. if it is loose it might just be rattling against the ac pulley. not sure exactly what type of clatter you are hearing. removing it to check isnt so bad. first remove the ac pulley though, it make it much easier. then you just need a big breaker bar and a very short 30mm socket. also you will need to lock the flywheel in place, there are several methods to doing this. seach the board and you will find a bunch of alternatives to the actual flywheel tool.
