DIY or Farm-out? Posted by Saabu [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Need inner driver advice, kyle morley, Tue, 29 Jan 2008 18:52:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'd say this job of replacing the drivers would rank right up there with a PS rack replacement in terms of unpleasantness.
if u are going to DIY, better have lots of tools, ingenuity, patience, warm garage, hoist preferably and if not a love of sliding around on the floor trying to get at awkward dirt and oil-covered bolts. And you have to take each driver out of each carrier in order to truly swap the drivers - the carriers are not interchangeable because the Drivers side holds the speedo gear mechanism thingy.
Is the car a peach or on its last legs? is there much else the car needs in terms of front end work? I'm not saying junk the car just because of the inner drivers being worn. as someone said, if u are going that deep into the front end, might as well renew other components if needed.
and i woldnt think they'd suddenly get worse - perhaps the cold weather is contributing, or else you have something else going on like worn wheel bearings, pinion bearing in tranny or noisy winter tires? and you didnt mention if vibration or just noise has gotten worse.
I dont think the parts prices have skyrocketed, have they?
if it were me i'd purchase new drivers and diff seals, maybe update the tripod bearings and/or CV joints if they are all old. Even if you get a junkyard unit, there's a good chance its already half worn and you'd still have to take it out of the current carrier and swap it into the other carrier.
Oh, the other thing is that the passenger side driver tends to get cooked by the exhaust system and the lube dries up. it could be only that side needs attention. perhaps do that side first and see if it solves the problem?
its not gonna be cheap to farm it out, but you'd save yourself the stress and mess of a job it sounds like you've never done before.
hope that helps,
