The bolts on the slave do more than merely hold the slave in place. They also hold the slave TOGETHER. The slave is made of three main parts: housing, piston, and the internal sleeve. The sleeve is held into the housing by the small amount of friction it's o-ring supplies, and the fact that once all three bolts are in and tight, it's got no place to go. Were you to apply pressure to a slave that wasn't bolted in, the sleeve part would depart the housing first, owing to greater surface area.

The problem in working in this area is the available space, which isn't much, AND the fact that you can't just "re-tap", you have to put in a Heli-Coil for the new screw to have anything to hold on to.
