Starter removes it, vise grips for tightening:

Sox fan:
To clarify, get cut-down socket on crank bolt, with long breaker bar on it, jammed against something solid. THen just bump your starter. Check to see if bolt is loose, if so it will spin out with your fingers. If not bump starter a couple more times. Don't overdo it or starter will jam bolt and socket and breaker bar into the firewall and then you'll have to pry motor backwards to free things up to get tools out of there.
This is detailed on townsendimports web site, once there click Saabmaster Site, Technical Documents. Also on here if you use search.
Note you need to unbolt the little extra pulley off the crank pulley itself first, I think 4 10mm headed bolts, crack loose and they spin out with fingers. And cut down your socket. Get right size - - 27 mm for last few years, older ones 30 mm. That's 1 1/16" or 1 3/16", see my posts on this topic. Sears now only stocks SAE in big sizes but if they're equal in real measurement there's no difference.
To tighten, I took out a bolt I think and pried the black plastic clutch cover away at its bottom corner, passenger side, and clamped a pair of 7" needle nose Vise Grips onto the flywheel, they hold it just fine when they jam down against the bell housing. Also a Townsend trick I think.
I never did find a torque value for that crank bolt, just reefed on it about what I figured a bolt that big called for. Still in there.
If you use a bar to hold flywheel, somebody's got to hold it up in that hole and into the teeth of the flywheel, as your torque jams it against the tranny case. Don't think it would be possible to do that singlehanded. At least not easy.
My own post of Aug. 8 2005 comes up about the bottom of the page if you type in "cut down socket" into search window. I wrote it right after I did this and I put in every painful detail.
