Transmission Woes

As anticipated the automatic transmission in my '91 CSET is just starting to develop the signs of wear that seems to be common around the 140,xxx mileage point.
Issue started a week ago. When the transmission is cold, or I've been driving for less than 10 minutes I'll hear and feel the transmission 'lurch' into gear with a slight 'clunk' sound when beginning to accelerate from a dead stop. It almost feels sluggish as if it's going directly into 2nd from the dead stop. It also seems to do a similar 'searching for the right gear' as I begin to re-accelerate from rolling through a stop sign at about 2mph (not doing a complete stop). Once the transmission is up to normal operating temperature the symptoms seem to go away.
QUESTION:
Am I too late? I'm hoping I caught the signs early enough that I can possibly reverse them by tightening/adjusting the bands in the transmission. Will this help return the trans to normal operation even if only temporarily as I know it's just a matter of time until it completely gives out.
