i had posted awhile back soliciting people's most obscure vacuum leaks because i was going round the bend trying to figure out why my SPG engine performance was just plain sluggish, and RPM would drop as soon as i touched the gas pedal, and it would also drop to about 400 then back up to 850 when i took my foot off the gas when coasting. The symptoms were so much like a hooter valve failure (without the hoot) but the bpv was quickly ruled out. i checked every other possible route of vacuum to no avail.
yesterday i had the car in the garage idling and the hissing coming from the engine was so loud i just had to find it's source. using my automotive stethoscope i found the loudest hiss was coming from the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator (it was so bad i could hear the hissing inside the silicon line, from OUTSIDE the line).
discussing it with my mechanic who had once-overed the car in the fall for the same performance issue, he said the line pressure had been correct at the fpr, far as he recalled. Anyway, having just stripped another 87 SPG that ran like a scared rabbit, i swapped fpr's and lo and behold, problem solved!
