This makes waaay too much sense.
Point A: That's called the Lambda (oxygen sensor) Pulse Modulator. That should be running at 60 or so cycles a second I believe. It constantly changes the fuel flow to one side of the metering body based on what the oxygen sensor is telling the oxygen sensor control unit. Notice how the line (which leaked and sidelined my Saana last summer- inspect this!) runs from the high side of the warm-up regulator to the fuel distributor to the lambda modulating valve and back to the warm-up regulator. I'm pretty sure that thing fine-tunes the final fuel supply pressure to the fuel distributor to fine-tune the mixture. There are other inputs (decel shutoff solenoid will lock this at 50% or 65% depending on model year, wide-open throttle and idle may also come into play, and the oxygen sensor thermoswitch between the intake pipes will lock it out while your oxygen sensor is still warming up).
One (ahem...) '84 Turbo in the junkyard about four years ago had a (fanfare for the common car) moderate underhood fire starting somewhere in the vicinity of the filter and distributing assembly and seemed to spread to the electrical and brake apparatus, then through the firewall before the self-extinguishing interior materials made it put itself out. The instruments and leading edges of the sun visor were melted, but the knee bolster and seat and rest of the dash were fine. Who says aircraft engineers don't design cars well? Will a new Scab do this? I doubt it. I was impressed when I saw it.
Of course, the copious amounts of leaked oil on the exhaust side of the motor probably weren't helping. Would you just change the eight dollar valve cover gasket already?!?
