...On a Classic 900, at least not from the factory.
Saab didn't clear coat all of their solid colors until 2002...
Some metallic colors were clear coated over the years, but I'm doubting that early.
Head over to the Detailing BB and ask around there. If the paint is original and new, a good paint cleaning, polish, maybe followed by the clay bar treatment, and finished off with a quality wax will give a finish that's as good, if not better than clear coat.
Clear coat was developed by carmakers to make their lives cheaper and easier, and to have the color look good longer.
Part of my car was repainted with clearcoat by an unknowing shop. It looks bad where the clearcoat didn't adhere well to the base paint...
