When I lived in the north (NY State, many years ago) my 900s auto would act just like that on cold days ... when the tranny & fluid was cold.
My fluid was on the low side of normal. I topped it up and all was well until I sold it at ~240k (and presumably beyond that).
I changed the fluid and filter every 30k. I think that clean fresh fluid is the key.
