Check the voltage on fuse 30 Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Car mysteriously died -- looking for suggestions, Bill S., Sat, 16 Feb 2008 10:17:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Fuse 30 is the fuel pump fuse. You've got spark, and if the engine is turning, probably air. You didn't mention fuel.
Use a voltmeter to measure the voltage on fuse 30 (to ground) when you're cranking the engine. It should be around 12 volts. If it isn't, something is keeping power from the fuel pump. One thing that comes to mind is that you were probably pushing high boost - there is an overboost switch under the dash, pretty much above your left knee. If it senses overboost, it opens, killing power to the fuel pump relay, which kills power to the fuse, and naturally, the fuel pump itself. Now, that switch should close again when the pressure is removed, but if it stuck open, you'd get no fuel. So measure that voltage - if it's 0, suspect the fuel pump relay, but I'd go for the overboost switch. To check it, you can just short the two leads together - look for a device with a vacuum line going to it with two brown/white wires under the dash.
If you do have 12 volts on that fuse, you should crank the engine and see if you can hear the fuel pump run. Then pull a spark plug or two and see if the have fuel on them. And pull the distributor cap off and make sure the rotor hasn't come apart.
Good luck!
