As I said, I really don't think the engine in the car is going to affect its value. For every person that would pay money for a totally original b-motor 5-door there is another person that would pay money for a 5-door with a serviceable engine. Based on my Saabnet/Ebay observations, the car is probably worth $1000-$1500... maybe $2000 if it's really as nice as you say, and I think you'd really have to hunt for that buyer.

The car may go up in value some day but they aren't worth much now, and I think you really have to ask yourself a) how long you really intend to keep it, and b) whether during its stay with you is it gonna be stored or driven. Once you answer those questions, I think you'll have a clearer view of what you must do.

Keep in mind that if you are planning to make a killing on this car you're going to have to keep it for another 5-10 years at *least*. Also keep in mind that in 5 years we'll be able to bring over mid '80s 5-doors from Europe, where they sold 5-doors virtually til the end of the run. I think it'll be tough to ask, say, $5k for your car when someone can buy a 5-door from Europe for $500 and ship it for $2000... At that point, your market will be someone who wants a 1st year 5-door Saab, and that market is tiny if it exists at all. Most people who are seeking collector Saabs will (IMHO) be seeking the classic sporty 900 Turbo 3-door, not the non-turbo grocery getter...

My advice: Put a 16vT in it and enjoy the crap out of it.
