It's definitely a DIY project, though absolutely no fun. The hardest part is getting the crank pulley off with the engine in the car - you need a very shallow socket and a really long breaker bar. Once you're past that, it's a bunch of small 10 and 12mm bolts, a flashlight, and some patience. I'd replace the crankshaft seal and of course the oil pump o-ring while you're down there - it's trivial, cheap, and can't hurt. It'll make your life easier if you remove the A/C compressor before you start - if it's charged and working you can gently swing it around and rest it on the windshield (DON'T kink or manhandle the hoses!) - if it's not charged you can just remove it.
