Diane,
Your car was running rough an now it won't even turn over at all, right? This (now) sounds more like a charging system problem. The rough running was occurring because you were driving on a battery which was not being re-charged by the alternator as it's supposed to be. This is a fairly common event also (on most old cars, not just Saabs). This condition will effect the injection and ignition systems and cause the rough running long before the battery is too weak to actually turn the engine over. You could install a good fully charged battery, start the car (assuming that it will start) and then watch to see whether the red "battery" light goes off once it's running. If that light stays on then there is a charging system problem. It should come on for a few seconds just when the car starts up. If the battery is not being continuously charged as you drive it gradually loses it's charge until it is too weak to turn the engine over. Typical reasons for such a problem in the charging circuit are; bad, old battery (just won't take a charge anymore), loose or corroded connections, defective alternator (they all wear out eventually), loose alternator belt, defective regulator. The easy things to check are 1) the small ground wire going from the alternator to the chassis or engine (some guys put two for added security). Since these alternators are rubber mounted they need a wire to ground them and if the wire breaks then the alternator will not put out and charge the battery. It's a very common fault and easily fixed. 2) Check all the connections at the battery, chassis, engine, starter motor, etc. Most commonly we find corrosion at the battery terminal posts and you should disconnect those and clean them with a wire brush. A very small amount of corrosion can interfere with battery charging. 3) Check the alternator belts. If they are loose the alternator won't spin sufficiently to put out a proper charge. Beyond that you must get kind of involved with testing alternator output and such so let us know what you find on the basic stuff before we go there. About 90% of the time the problem is one of those basic faults. Good luck.
