victory from a lost race

I was just driving home from work. I live in a rural area, but need to drive through the city of Troy, NY to get home. As I was doing my usual bobbing and weaving and lane changing (learned from years of learning traffic patterns and traffic light sequences) I noticed a Honda S2000 with PA plates was tailgating me through the traffic. As Rt 7 heads out of Troy it passes through some recent commercial development and switches between one and two lanes as some of the bigger stores have their own turn lanes. I was behind a logging truck and scooted around it to beat it to the next light. The Honda followed but didn't make it in front of the truck. He ended up right next to me, in the right-turn-into-Walmart-only lane. As we sat at the light, I knew it would be go time as soon as the light changed. There is about a quarter mile before he would run out of runway and have to break quickly and go into Walmart or cut into my lane. Bing, the light changes and were off. It was neck and neck the whole way. I was at around 80mph and I hadn't even floored it yet. I punched it and hit fuel cut--dammit! he just made it in front of me before he would have hit the curb and possibly the guardrail as his lane ended. He looked in his rear view and waved. I just started laughing. The guy was all proud because he barely outran a $600 1992 Saab 900 winter-beater with 190K miles, studded snow tires and a 3-speed auto box with his $38,000 sports car. Too funny!
