The light on my car (88 T) would sometimes not extinguish after starting the car.
When it did, the battery charged fine.
One day it stopped charging altogether. I replaced the regulator assembly and all has been fine (with the charging circuit) since.
If you remove the regulator assembly, the condition of the brushes will indicate if it is the brush assembly or if the entire alternator needs to be replaced.
The price of the brush assembly is so low that I don't feel checking the regulator is justified. Rather, just replace the whole assembly. The fact that it sometimes charges would seem to indicate that the regulator is ok. Solid state components never come back from the dead. Once they short, or open, that's it.
The price of an alternator does justify changing the brush assembly and then having it tested. Most discount auto supply stores do this for free, one that I know is Auto-Zone.
