K-S,
Sounds a little like the parking pawl won't disengage (on top of some other problems). This could be a failure of the cable, shift lever mechanism or the spring on the shift rod or an internal defect. Remove the small steel cover plate on the right side of the unit and you'll see the shift rod. It's the link between the cable and the bell crank that moves the manual valve and engages the parking pawl. The cable pulls it and a coil spring moves it the other way as the cable is relaxed. Try moving the rod toward the front of the car with some pliers or vice grips. If it goes forward it is moving toward releasing the parking pawl so watch for the car to start rolling. The pawl will release when the rod is fully forward. If this works then most likely the cable is seized. To make that drive you'll have to fix that first.
This could also be caused by the final drive being locked-up, the planetary gears being locked-up or the parking pawl linkage being separated at some point. You can drop the rear pan and to deal with the parking pawl directly but you dump your ATF and open a can of worms so check that rod movement first. If the final drive is seized up you may need a tow truck to get to your friend's shop. Good luck
