Well it shouldn't do that. Proceeding on the premise that this unit was recently (properly) rebuilt, first and most importantly check the adjustment of the shift lever mechanism. If that adjustment is incorrect you will notice poor performance in high gear and at some point the gear train in the transmission will shed teeth. Sadly many people just don't bother to make that adjustment after installing a fresh transmission in their old Saab 900. Checking the throttle pressure cable would also be in order and finally doing something to help the valves slide more freely, like flushing and re-filling with fresh atf or using an additive. The governor may be hanging up or you may have a sticking accumulator but that would be a lot of sloppy work so make those other checks first. The procedures are detailed in the Saab section 4 service manual if you have access to that. If not I think they have been posted here before (maybe by me) so use the search function. By the way, slamming into third gear implies abrupt engagement of the rear drum clutch so adjusting the bands would be unlikely to give any positive result. Good luck
