With starter fully installed in car you clip one wire of remote starter onto Terminal 30, the big fat cable directly from battery +, and with the small wire pulled off it, the other onto the small push-on, Terminal 15A, then push the remote starter and it should engage flywheel and spin engine. Make sure car is in neutral. If you want it to start the car make sure ignition is ON as well.
If your keyswitch still doesn't seem to have any spring action to return it from START you'll have to make sure it doesn't get moved to start while you're underway, or else don't replace the wire to Terminal 15A.
If you plan to use the remote starter to start the car for the long haul, they're usually pretty crappy and the internal switch contacts burn or the plastic melts from repeated use. Fine for a week or so tho.
I just re-read your first post and if you actually were jumping from Terminal 30 to the fat wire that runs down into the starter, you would only have been making starter spin, not tripping the solenoid and making bendix drive engage. So the original starter could be fine.
I don't think there's any difference between auto and manual cars starter wise. And the 88 is the same layout as the later car so should be a perfect fit.
I don't think Terminal 50 gets any use, by the way.
