I am in the middle of this right now, and I must say it is a royal pain in the butt. I spent about two hours last night trying the various tricks, and ....well, let's just say I got to use one of my favorite tools: a sawzall with a metal cutting blade. I simply cut the slave cylinder in half, like slicing a sausage. It is pretty tough - I wore out one blade, but it eventually gave it up. It comes out pretty easily in two pieces, but I still think you'll have to remove the clutch and pressure plate when you refit the new slave.
Have a look at the 5-speed conversion FAQ for a procedure to compress the spring for the re-installation .
