I don't know what model year you have but I found in my 86 the best (and inexpensive) addition to the sound system that I made was sound dampening throughout - well placed but not excessive. IMHO a quieter interior means the investment you make in your speakers will pay off at the margins where a minimal investment will pay dividends.
I have a low end Sony xplod with Sony 4inchers in the front and pioneer 6 inchers in the back. When I recovered the head liner I added sound dampening - not the expensive stuff - just spray on rubber coating to the floor with strategically placed felt behind sunroof area and the sunroof itself where vibration is an issue. I also introduced a small amount of expanding foam into the A pillars and under and around the rear seat cavities, with additional padding in the trunk area and doors. The car is significantly quieter overall meaning that my not-so-great sound system sounds pretty good.
On the other hand I have read here that some expanding foam is not flame retardant, can reduce the effect of the flow through system and that when expanded can potentially cut off the emissions hose that runs through the A pillar - so far no problems in this area for me and since I don't plan to resell not an issue from an aesthetic perspective. If you are satisfied with interior sound of your car then inexpensive speakers will do (IMHO).
