The reason that some people swap the axle side to side is the groove that wears into the outer hub. The outter C/V joint tends to get a wear groove into the normal area of drive force from the axle, usually on straight forward driving. Swapping the axle's puts the groove futher back from the driving force on the outer C/V hub. This will only give a few hundred to a thousand extra miles. The inner tripod bearings seems to only fail when the rubber boot fails, allowing dirt to enter the hub. It's normal when checking the tri-pods bearing for it to move side to side on their shaft, as long as you don't find the needle bearing have chattered onto the shaft they ride on. When you purchase re-built axle's, they always have re-used tri-pods. There not easy to remove from the axle shaft since there isn't much area to grab the bearings housing with a three jawed-puller. I've reused and reversed axles when I couldn't afford to replace with rebuilt. Not as nice as replacement with re-built.
