If you are still running the factory cat, or one similar to it, I'd really recommend getting a heat shield back on there. Chances are nothing bad will happen, but you certainly don't want to risk damage over a stupid piece of metal. At best, you might melt your wiring harness, at worst you could start a fire.
If you've got an aftermarket cat on there, chances are it has a heat-shield built in... most do since many cars don't have a heat shield to start with like a c900...
