I've got a minor problem, or maybe not, with my '92 900 base. When leaving the driveway first thing in the morning, the first run up through the gears, it tends to hang onto them too long. Also, the shifts are uncharacteristically abrupt. When this happens, I'm giving it maybe 2/3 throttle (er, 2/3 of the way to kickdown) and it'll hold first to 4300rpm or so, then grab second, and hold second longer than usual (unsure of rpm) and shift to third. After this, it's fine until i leave work. Normally 1-2 is a soft but proper shift, and 2-3 is a slightly firmer shift (you can feel the front band release, and the rear clutch apply). It engages reverse rather firmly once warm, also, but not firmly enough to raise a warning flag in my mind.

I live on a 55mph road, work's on a 35mph road, leaving work after it's cooled down it still holds first and second longer than when it's warm. Once again though, after the first run through the gears it's fine.

An old-school tech at the dealership I work for suggested warming the fluid by not-totally-stall testing it a couple times, and seeing how that affected things. It made a marginal improvement, too little to be sure of. I gave it a 10-second run at 1600rpm or so twice before leaving my driveway the other morning, twice, if it matters. I should mention the ambient temp in the morning is maybe 25-30 here this time of year.

The car has 200k on it, came with a fairly complete service history. I flushed it with castrol type F when i purchased it, and the fluid didn't look bad at all when i did it, it was just time for replacement, it's been done every 25-30k for the last 100k.

Input appreciated. I guess what I'm asking, is, is this out of line, a warning sign, or is this just normal for an old-school gearbox such as this?
