Yes, generally a noisy transmission is the sign of things to come. However, what is the nature of your noise? The typical early failing pinion bearing noise is a low whine that tends to be heard in 4th and 5th gear and only under acceleration (not when coasting).
If you are gentle with your shifts and avoid boosting in the lower gears,this noise can go on a long time (ie. years) before the transmission actually starts become difficult to shift, pops out of gear or the pinion bearing fails completely
It is probably worthwhile to change the transmission lube just as a matter of course (on a new-to-you car) however additives are not going to be able to turn back the clock on pinion deterioration. Just use the recommended 10w-30 and repeat every two years.
