93 2.1 non-turbo 4 door. 120-160 thousand miles (the chap I bought it from disconnected the speedo, I'd guess when he bought it, and commuted 80-100 miles a day for ??? It has 117 on it now.
about 3 months ago the starter went out on my SAAB. battery voltage was good, but with starter trying to turn voltage dropped to 8-9 volts. Cleaned all cable connections. same. real slow and not enuf to fire.
replaced the starter with a rebuilt from Kragens (Parts America) THAT was fun (not). wham, started almost as well as my MGB!
after sitting for a couple weeks (I have two early 90s cars, and rotate driving them, usually for 1-2 tanks of gas) the SAAB gives me no click when I turn the key. If i repeat over and over it might catch and start pretty much normally. The lights go on full bright. I could not myself check light brightness while trying to crank, but there's no apparent engagement of the starter solenoid.
The battery connections were tightened (really were not loose). battery voltage, measured from the cable ends not the posts directly, was hi-12s, low 13s on different readings, so I think the battery is ok.
I have not yet broken out the Bentley to try to scope it out.
is there a potential issue with the leads to the switch on the consul? or do these switched spaz out? Is there any issue changing it? Or (unlikely, being a SAAB<G> is such a thing pretty straight forward and accessible?
