sound like bad connection from switch to solenoid or bad solenoid/starter as opposed to bad battery grounds/connection
try bypassing the ignition switch with ignition in neutral and key in start position with a direct connection

Sounds like a bad switch, but it could be the starter. You'll need to test it when it happens next time by jumping out of the car and connecting a positive lead to Pin 50 on the starter and see if the starter spins, or pull up the center console and hotwire the car.
Had the same thing happen on my SPG, and assumed it was a bad starter solenoid. After replacing the starter with a rebuilt, the problem persisted. I've since bypassed the starter portion of the ignition switch with a starter button, and no further problems.
If you find it's the switch, you may have luck taking it out and cleaning it - they can get pretty nasty with age. OTOH, a new switch is like $40 at eeuro...
