if the belt is still on & the pump quit working without Posted by vvack0matic [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: No power steering!, Saab88, Mon, 31 Mar 2008 17:13:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
leaking any fluid it would take the force of a tank driving through a brick wall to turn the wheel, which would damage the steering shafts u-joint that is right off the steering rack.
with the belt off the pump it would take the force of a motorcycle hitting a brick wall to turn the wheel, its sufficiently less force than the tank but lets face it, driving the car with fluid still in the system,.. well, heading to your local grocery store would be one heck of a work out, driving the car like this for more then a week one could get as huge as hulk hogan, & still there is the problem with damaging the u joint running right off the rack.
lets take a look at just what could happen, im sure you know where the pump is, but if not i`ll start from the top.
being its dark outside, im picturing a flashlight,
starting at the power-steering reservoir once again checking the fluid,... kinda amazing its not low, now look at the top of the motor, (the flat part on the valve cover, look at the space between the valve cover and the fire wall, with the flashlight shine it down in this area,
the first pulley wheel you see is the power steering pump wheel ( the one closest to the power steering reservoir)
this wheel should have a belt.
if not its your problem, however if you lost the belt while driving you would notice as it would take a great strain to turn the car any given way.
im picturing the belt still being on the pump, if this is so your problem is else-where.
when a 900 gets high in mileage its not uncommon for the car to start to develop a case of hard to steer. (kinda stiff)
but still more then able for the driver to drive the car.
the problem is (in this case)
the stiffness might get stiffer. not as bad as driving the car with no belt but its going to be up there.
my car had the case of the stiff steering wheel however i knew what the problem was, anyhow the steering wheel was stiff for about a month, at the time i thought no problem ill ride it out and in a year ill be huge (arms)
after a month the wheel got so hard to turn i thought i was going to snap the steering wheel right off the shaft, however this only lasted for an hour of driving then the steering wheel loosened way way up.
the problem is in the steering shaft u joint, the bearings get bind-ed and cause the steering wheel to be stiff, the work involved in changing on of these u joints is enough for me just to say f... it and drive with a stiff wheel.
i`d post a pic of what it looks like but then i would have to navigate away from this page and locate it. then post it and thats just to much rig-a-ma-row so... i wont
