I work for the federal government but don't let that sway you.
Years ago I worked for the Army and eventually ended up in HQDA and then OSD. But along the way I dealt with AM General in South Bend and Oshkosh and a few truck manufacturers. AM General in particular was/is in a truck rebuilding program with the old M35A2 deuce-and-a-half military trucks involving changing out the old multifuel engines and manual trans, etc. with a modern diesel engine, auto trans, central tire inflation system, bigger tires, no duallies, etc. Anyway, the remanufacture process also involved replacing/repairing rusted cabs and truck beds, etc: One of their processes involved POR-15...the stuff works, but they found out that UV light (sunlight) and probably air pollution breaks the stuff down unless it's sealed. Epoxy primer works well, IIRC, and then, of course, the Army/AMG used CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coating) which has an awful finish (looks cool in camouflage) but you'll get equal or better results with a catalyzed urethane or my favorite is Imron (IF you can even get the stuff today). Use Imron only in a well-ventilated area or outside and preferably with a fresh air respirator. The fumes are somewhat toxic.
