How to separate Automatic transmission from engine Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 04:59:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Thanks for everyone's help. My AT now rests on the garage floor and the engine is swinging peacefully above it. Although the info in the FAQ, Bentley, and the Haynes manuals is generally very good, they really miss adequately describing what is required, so the advice here is critical.
Here is the trick (as precisely as I can describe it). In order to get the clearance to drop the AT, the torque converter must be pushed back towards the front of the car (back of engine), after all of the 8 bolts holding the flex plate have been removed. The method is not intuitive and is poorly described in the available info. To do this you must have the flex plate dowel in the 6 o'clock (down position). But, since you can't see it, this is not easy. The trick is to line up the left edge (counter clockwise edge)of the opposite sheet metal bracket with the starter motor (just like the timing mark bracket but the other one. Then the torque converter slides easily back and you can get the clearance.
